Welcome to Child's Play

Child's Play is more than just a publishing programme, it is a philosophy. We understand that a child's early years are more important than any other and this is when they learn the most about the world around them. Books play a vital role in building the foundations for learning, and exposure to quality books from an early age helps to develop an enquiring mind and a lifelong love of reading.

Child's Play has a history of creating innovative, award-winning books for children from 0-8 years that promote learning through play – books that fully reflect our diverse society in terms or heritage, disability, gender and family.

Child's Play books are loved by parents, teachers and, most importantly, children all over the world.

Child's Play is keen to make you aware that this year Booktrust, the independent reading and writing charity that makes a significant contribution to the educational outcomes of children from the earliest age, is celebrating 20 years of Bookstart.

A much-loved early reading programme, Bookstart gifts free books to babies, toddlers and three-year-olds. The programme exists to give every child a flying start in life, and that’s why Child’s Play is supporting the campaign to help secure it for future generations. We’ll be celebrating everything that’s special about Bookstart, including the 30 million free books that have been gifted since babies first started receiving packs in1992.

Our staff are signing up to the simple Bookstart 20 pledge: to share 20 books in 2012. Thousands of parents, carers, librarians, teachers and a whole host of famous faces have already done the same. You can join us by filling out the pledge postcard in your local library or making the pledge online.

We’ve been working with Booktrust now for over 10 years and we are very proud of the strong links we have developed. We also appreciate and have seen the enormous benefits that sharing books gives to families, as well as creating the readers of tomorrow. Along with the fantastic books, the Bookstart packs are full of parental tips and guidance, which will help children prepare to start school as confident and eager learners, with good communication and early literacy skills.

As Philip Pullman, author of the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, has said: ‘Bookstart is one of the most imaginative and generous schemes ever conceived. To put a gift of books into the hands of newborn children and their parents is to help open the door into the great treasury of reading, which is the inheritance of every one of us, and the only road to improvement and development and intellectual delight in every field of life… if you miss the first years of a child's development, nothing can clear it up. It's gone. It won't happen. A whole generation will lose out.’
